Half of all councils have fewer than 139 chargers per 100,000 people, and 121 of the 361 have at least the UK figure, which London's boroughs pull up. Northern Ireland has 60 per 100,000 people, the lowest of the four nations.

Across the UK there are about 13 privately kept plug-in cars for each public charger: 1,561,648 cars at the end of June 2026 and 121,171 chargers on 1 July 2026. A high number means few public chargers for the cars kept there; a low one, as in central London, means plenty.

Plug-in cars are battery electric cars, plug-in hybrids and range extenders licensed at the end of June 2026 (DfT table VEH0142), counting cars kept by private individuals only, in councils with at least 1,000 of them. Company cars are counted at the registered keeper's address, which for a leasing firm can be a single town: Windsor and Maidenhead had 254,953 company plug-in cars, so including them would show where lease companies are rather than where people drive.

The data behind this table

Public charging devices reported operational at midnight on 1 July 2026, from Zapmap data, in the Department for Transport's electric vehicle charging infrastructure statistics (tables EVCI0101 and EVCI0102, published 27 August 2026, official statistics in development). Per 100,000 people uses the ONS mid-2024 population estimates. One charge point operator removed about 1,270 private chargers wrongly listed as public in June 2026, so the July figures for some councils are lower than April's. A device can have more than one connector. Isles of Scilly figures rest on a population of about 2,366.

Is it cheaper to charge at home or at a public charger?

At home, by a wide margin. On an off-peak EV tariff at 7.6p per kWh a car doing 3.5 miles per kWh costs about 2.2p a mile, against 22p on a rapid public charger at 77p. Our EV cost calculator works out the yearly cost for your mix.
